How much sun protection when doing sports?

With the arrival of spring, the recovery of outdoor sports activities intensifies. 

For the silhouette, for fitness and well being, health or pleasure, all the reasons are good to resume physical activity! 


Beware though sunlight. 

Cycling, walking, running, Nordic walking, tennis, golf, windsurfing are some examples of sports where the skin is exposed to sunlight. 

Sweating in the sun without protection can cause adverse consequences in the skin (sunburn, premature aging, cancer). Athletes should particularly pay attention to the risks involved. 

  • It is advisable to dress tightly woven clothing and not to go out between 12 and 16 hours, to learn about the light conditions at the place of practice and adapt protections.
  • Beware of photosensitizing drugs (some antibiotics cyclin family or quinolones, some anti-inflammatory drugs, calcium channel blockers, beta blockers, hypoglycemic favor taking sunburn). Consult the manual of your treatments.
  • Apply sunscreen every 2 hours. For athletes, it will be chosen from fluid textures because less fat and less sticky (often indicated for combination to oily skin). The sunscreen must be resistant to water. The degree of protection depends on the sport practiced, one hour on a lake or altitude is not equivalent to an hour's cycling campaign. Some areas are more sensitive, more must be protected (neck, lips, ears, hands, feet, shoulders). Favouring small models that can be easily transported or used sticks "large" special sensitive areas, easy to apply (which also protect tattoos, scars, dark spots). The sticks come in many colors (white, beige, or colored!). 
    Cosmetics ranges for sports: Tecare (in sports shops in some UCPA centers and some pharmacies), Aptonia (Decathlon) and its suncare range Sunny Motion. The Daylong mark (not specific to sport) has the advantage to be applied only once a day (available at pharmacies).
  • Wear a hat or head covering appropriate
  • Wear glasses with side protection and high index (total protection against UV filter and at least 90% of blue light)
  • The hydration during exercise is even more important when it's hot.
